OpenLogic Exec: Users Say Least Favorite OpenSource Model Is “Open Core”

Kim Weins, Sr VP Mktg, OpenLogic

Speaking of OpenLogic (see posting earlier today), the Colorado-based company has also reported the results of a survey they conducted earlier this month, along with their interpretation of the data. It doesn’t appear the survey was conducted in a scientific manner, and marketing executives rarely put out survey results in a press release that prove counter to their own business goals, but here are some of the findings claimed by Kim Weins, Senior VP of Marketing:

  • Open source continues to grow as companies proactively look for open source solutions
  • Companies want open source packages that have commercial support
  • Companies are currently more likely to use open source packages that are backed by multiple vendors or a community, and least likely to use a single project vendor
  • Larger companies with more than 200 employees are currently most likely to use open source packages that are backed by multiple vendors and least likely to use projects from a single vendor
  • Projects backed only by a community lose ground against other types when respondents of 200+ employee companies were asked about their future preferences
  • Despite its growing popularity with commercial open source startups, enterprise users of open source software prefer the “open core” model the least

According to Weins, the company conducted its own survey, distributed to about 10,000 users in its own database. Some were OpenLogic customers but most were not. The survey was sent out in the few days leading up to the US Labor Day holiday weekend.

Take it with a grain of salt, but the results are interesting. You can read more here and here.
